friends3I was just sitting here and realized that it’s already August!!!  My oldest son goes back to school next week.  In just a couple months it will be 93.1 The Wolf’s birthday…3 years!  I will never forget when I wore them down enough for them to get to come work here at the Wolf.  The “other” stations thought the Wolf was a joke, flash in the pan…they had bets on how long it would take before we gave up.  We’ll thanks to YOU the fur is still flying!!!  I can’t thank you enough for supporting the Wake with Wolf Show.  You all have made me laugh, we’ve cried and rocked out to some great music (on the radio and at concerts).  I don’t say this because it’s the PC thing to do…it’s from the very bottom of my heart – THANK YOU for supporting the underdog or as our friends call us The Wolf!  I’m just sayin…Chuck

We’ve had a bad habit for several years:  we load the film in the camera, take the pictures, and then put the roll of film in a dresser drawer. Recently, Susan’s been taking a few rolls a week to get them developed. We never know what we’re going to see when we open the package. It’s the closest we get to playing the lottery.

The pictures range from snapshots of church functions to pictures of our children when they were tiny, but they do have one thing in common — Susan isn’t in the picture. Why? She’s the official family photographer.

While thumbing through the pictures, I remembered a story Pastor Dan Rhodes told me last year. Dan is the pastor of two rural churches in Colorado and stays busy. Like most pastors, he has plenty to do, but by being the pastor of two churches, he has twice the committee meetings, and twice the worship services.

As Dan tells the story, his daughter’s third grade teacher requested a parent teacher conference with him. His wife usually took care of those conferences, but the teacher wanted to see him, not his wife.

At her insistence, he made an appointment to drop by the school in the afternoon. ‘I wanted you to see this drawing your daughter made of your family,’ she said. Dan looked at the drawing and asked, ‘Where am I?’ ‘That’s why I called you down here today, I asked your daughter the same question and she said you’re never home, so she left you out of the picture.’

A Mike Tyson punch couldn’t hurt any more than her words. Dan made some radical changes in his behavior and found that he could do his job and be a good father.

Are you in the picture with your family? Or are you too busy?

leanne2We got to talking this morning about modern technology and how the technology Chuck & I grew up with has all but disappeared.  Our friends called in some great items that made us a bit nostalgic. Do you kids know about:  drive-in movies, manually changing the TV channel, Atari, push lawnmowers, Pong, gas station attendants who checked the oil and tires and washed your windshield, bag boys who brought groceries out to the car, slide rules or rotary phones?  Let us know if you come up with some more!

Another of my patients, a successful businessmen, tells me that before his cancer he would become depressed unless things went a certain way. Happiness was “having the cookie.” If you had the cookie, things were good. If you didn’t have the cookie, life wasn’t worth anything. Unfortunately, the cookie kept changing. Some of the time it was money, sometimes power, sometimes sex. At other times, it was the new car, the biggest contract, the most prestigious address. A year and a half after his diagnosis of prostate cancer he sits shaking his head ruefully. “It’s like I stopped learning how to live after I was a kid. When I give my son a cookie, he is happy. If I take the cookie away or it breaks, he is unhappy. But he is two and a half and I am forty-three. It’s taken me this long to understand that the cookie will never make me happy for long. The minute you have the cookie it starts to crumble or you start to worry about it crumbling or about someone trying to take it away from you. You know, you have to give up a lot of things to take care of the cookie, to keep it from crumbling and be sure that no one takes it away from you. You may not even get a chance to eat it because you are so busy just trying not to lose it. Having the cookie is not what life is about.”

My patient laughs and says cancer has changed him. For the first time he is happy. No matter if his business is doing well or not, no matter if he wins or loses at golf. “Two years ago, cancer asked ne, ‘Okay, what’s important? What is really important?’ Well, life is important. Life. Life any way you can have it. Life with the cookie. Life without the cookie. Happiness does not have anything to do with the cookie, it has to do with being alive. Before, who made the time?” He pauses thoughtfully. “I guess life is the cookie.”

It’s amazing how we tend to forget about the simple things in life, such as a roof over our heads or shoes under our feet (thanks, Darius).  For me, it was air conditioning.  Now, in West Virginia where I grew up, we at the Walker household didn’t have that luxury, just box and ceiling fans…that’s all.  Needless to say, I didn’t think it would be such a big deal when my AC started blowing hot air on Monday morning.

“Heck, this ain’t nothin’…I’ll just cut the windows open and crank up the fans,” I said to myself as I prepared for work Monday morning…that was, until I arrived back home Monday afternoon in the high-humid hot as haties NC summer weather.

88 inside at 4:27 in the house...and humid as all get out!

88 inside at 4:27 in the house…and humid as all get out!

Thankfully, I still have a month left on my home warranty, so I was able to just pay the deductible and get an AC guy out to the house…but let me tell you…trying to get a night’s sleep in 88-92 degree indoor heat…unbearable.  Now, everything’s fixed, after $500 of warranty-covered parts and labor, I’m back in sweet air conditioned bliss, and this guy won’t ever take for granted the little things in life!

One day a fisherman was lying on a beautiful beach, with his fishing pole propped up in the sand and his solitary line cast out into the sparkling blue surf. He was enjoying the warmth of the afternoon sun and the prospect of catching a fish.

About that time, a businessman came walking down the beach, trying to relieve some of the stress of his workday. He noticed the fisherman sitting on the beach and decided to find out why this fisherman was fishing instead of working harder to make a living for himself and his family. “You aren’t going to catch many fish that way,” said the businessman to the fisherman. “You should be working rather than lying on the beach!”

The fisherman looked up at the businessman, smiled and replied, “And what will my reward be?” “Well, you can get bigger nets and catch more fish!” was the businessman’s answer. “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman, still smiling. The businessman replied, “You will make money and you’ll be able to buy a boat, which will then result in larger catches of fish!” “And then what will my reward be?” asked the fisherman again. The businessman was beginning to get a little irritated with the fisherman’s questions. “You can buy a bigger boat, and hire some people to work for you!” he said.

“And then what will my reward be?” repeated the fisherman. The businessman was getting angry. “Don’t you understand? You can build up a fleet of fishing boats, sail all over the world, and let all your employees catch fish for you!” Once again the fisherman asked, “And then what will my reward be?” The businessman was red with rage and shouted at the fisherman, “Don’t you understand that you can become so rich that you will never have to work for your living again! You can spend all the rest of your days sitting on this beach, looking at the sunset. You won’t have a care in the world!”

The fisherman, still smiling, looked up and said, “And what do you think I’m doing right now?”

A butcher, who had had a particularly good day, proudly flipped his last chicken on the scale and weighed it.  “That will be $6.35,” he told the customer.

“That’s a good price, but it really is a little too small,” said the woman. “Don’t you have anything larger?”

Hesitating, but thinking fast, the butcher returned the chicken to the refrigerator, paused a moment, then took it out again.

“This one,” he said faintly, “will be $6.65.”

The woman paused for a moment, then made her decision.

“You know what,” she said, “I’ll take BOTH of them!”

It is always the right thing to be honest and ethical.  But for those perpetually challenged, you should also know that being dishonest always comes back to “bite you.”

By Kim Kane, “A 6th Bowl of Chicken Soup for the Soul”

Last night was the last game for my eight-year-old son’s soccer team. It was the final quarter. The score was two to one, my son’s team in the lead. Parents encircled the field, offering encouragement.

With less than ten seconds remaining, the ball rolled in front of my son’s teammate, one Mikey O’Donnel. With shouts of “Kick it!” echoing across the field, Mikey reared back and gave it everything he had. All round me the crowd erupted. O’Donnel had scored!

Then there was silence. Mikey had scored all right, but in the wrong goal, ending the game in a tie. For a moment there was total hush. You see, Mikey has Down’s syndrome and for him there is no such thing as a wrong goal. All goals were celebrated by a joyous hug from Mikey. He had even been known to hug the opposing players when they scored.

The silence was finally broken when Mikey, his face filled with joy, grabbed my son, hugged him and yelled, “I scored! I scored. Everybody won! Everybody won!” For a moment I held my breath, not sure how my son would react. I need not have worried. I watched, through tears, as my son threw up his hand in the classic high-five salute and started chanting, “Way to go Mikey! Way to go Mikey!” Within moments both teams surrounded Mikey, joining in the chant and congratulating him on his goal.

Later that night, when my daughter asked who had won, I smiled as I replied, “It was a tie. Everybody won.”
