An atheist was walking through the woods.

“What majestic trees!”

“What powerful rivers!”

“What beautiful animals!” he said to himself.

As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look. He saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charge towards him.

He ran as fast as he could up the path. He looked over his shoulder and saw that the bear was closing in on him.

He looked over his shoulder again and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up, but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him.

At that instant the atheist cried out, “Oh, my God!”

Time stopped.

The bear froze.

The forest was silent.

As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. “You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?”

The atheist looked directly into the light. “It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?”

“Very well,” said the voice.

The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke:

“Lord, bless this food which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.”

Name the five wealthiest people in the world.

Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.

Name the last five winners of the Miss America contest.

Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.

Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor or actress.

Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remembers the headliners of yesterday.

These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields.

But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten.

Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.

Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.

Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.

Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.

Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Name half a dozen heroes whose stories have inspired you.

Easier?

The lesson?

The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards.  They are the ones who care.

It’s a shame that we have to have a special day to remind people to be nice to others, but hey — whatever it takes, right?  Today, April 29th, is Pay It Forward Day.  The idea is to do a good deed for three people and hopefully each one of them will go out and do a good deed for three more people and so on.  Some ideas,  stories and other stuff can be found by clicking HERE.

The first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder.

I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being.

She said, ‘Hi handsome, my name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?’

I laughed and enthusiastically responded; ‘Of course you may!’ and she gave me a giant squeeze.

‘Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?’ I asked.

She jokingly replied, ‘I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…’

‘No seriously,’ I asked. I was curious what may have motivated her to be taking on this challenge at her age.

‘I always dreamed of having a college education and now I’m getting one!’ she told me.

After class we walked to the student union building and shared a chocolate milkshake.

We became instant friends. Every day, for the next three months, we would leave class together and talk nonstop. I was always mesmerized listening to this ‘time machine’ as she shared her wisdom and experience with me.

Over the course of the year, Rose became a campus icon and she easily made friends wherever she went. She loved to dress up and she reveled in the attention bestowed upon her from the other students. She was living it up.

At the end of the semester we invited Rose to speak at our football banquet. I’ll never forget what she taught us. She was introduced and stepped up to the podium. As she began to deliver her prepared speech, she dropped her three by five cards on the floor.

Frustrated and a little embarrassed she leaned into the microphone and simply said, ‘I’m sorry I’m so jittery. I gave up beer for Lent and this whiskey is killing me! I’ll never get my speech back in order so let me just tell you what I know.’

As we laughed she cleared her throat and began, ‘ We do not stop playing because we are old; we grow old because we stop playing.

There are only four secrets to staying young, being happy and achieving success. You have to laugh and find humor every day. You’ve got to have a dream. When you lose your dreams, you die.

We have so many people walking around who are dead and don’t even know it!

There is a huge difference between growing older and growing up.

If you are nineteen years old and lie in bed for one full year and don’t do one productive thing, you will turn twenty years old… If I am eighty-seven years old and stay in bed for a year and never do anything I will turn eighty-eight.

Anybody can grow older. That doesn’t take any talent or ability. The idea is to grow up by always finding opportunity in change. Have no regrets.

The elderly usually don’t have regrets for what we did, but rather for things we did not do. The only people who fear death are those with regrets.’

She concluded her speech by courageously singing ‘The Rose.’

She challenged each of us to study the lyrics and live them out in our daily lives. At the year’s end Rose finished the college degree she had begun all those years ago.

One week after graduation Rose died peacefully in her sleep.

Over two thousand college students attended her funeral in tribute to the wonderful woman who taught by example that it’s never too late to be all you can possibly be.

A fisherman says he caught an 80 pound flathead catfish at High Rock Lake on Saturday. The fish may be a state record.

The Yadkin Riverkeeper, Dean Naujoks, has been kayaking the entirety of the Yadkin River and took pictures of the large fish that he believes is at least 80 pounds. The state record is 78 pounds.

The Natural Wildlife Commission has to verify the weight of the High Rock Lake fish; their results should come in the next few days.

Dust if you must, but wouldn’t it be better
To paint a picture, or write a letter,
Bake a cake, or plant a seed;
Ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there’s not much time,
With rivers to swim, and mountains to climb;
Music to hear, and books to read;
Friends to cherish, and life to lead.

Dust if you must, but the world’s out there
With the sun in your eyes, and the wind in your hair;
A flutter of snow, a shower of rain,
This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must, but bear in mind,
Old age will come and it’s not kind.
And when you go (and go you must)
You, yourself, will make more dust.

Remember, a house becomes a home when you can write
“I love you” on the furniture…..

In radio, we are privileged to see many new artists before they are set free on the rest of the world.  Record labels will bring their artists by for a visit, and the artist will play a few songs acoustically for anyone in the station that can take a few minutes to give them an audience.  In the past few months, I have seen more talent in these little artist previews than you’d find in Giants Stadium at an American Idol audition!!  A few you should check out:  Chris Janson, Ash Bowers, Blaine Larson, and this guy, Jerrod Niemann.  Not only does he look darn good on camera, but he is part of the “Traler Park” songwriting group that includes Jamey Johnson & Randy Houser (look for them in cameos at the end of the official video here ), and he sang ALL 9 parts (high, low, everything!) on this song!!  Yep, he’s definitely a new favorite of mine :)

First of all, I want to thank everybody who has helped me with this cause in the past– you are a such a huge blessing to me!

On May 15 in downtown Greensboro, I will again be walking to end Alzheimer’s, a disease that affected my mother, her sister and several of my great-aunts for many years.  Right now, more than five-million Americans have Alzheimer’s and 78 million baby boomers are at risk– unless we find a way to change the course of this disease.  I can tell you first hand that Alzheimer’s and related dementias are devastating and there is NO CURE.  That smart, funny, loving person you knew all your life is now unrecognizable except perhaps in appearance. Alzheimer’s take a toll– both mentally and financially– on every family that is forced to deal with it.

BUT YOU CAN HELP, and here’s how: make a donation by clicking here, or– better yet– join my Team here!  Together, we will MOVE to end Alzheimer’s.

Thanks so much for your support and God bless!
